What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a safe and totally natural state. Everyone has experienced hypnosis many times but mostly without realising it. If you've ever driven home on auto-pilot or been absorbed in a good book or film you've experienced hypnosis. Another example is daydreaming or that pleasant state we all know before going to sleep. Hypnosis is simply an alternative state of consciousness.

Hypnotherapy is different to other forms of therapy in that, the therapist works with the subconscious not the conscious mind.

The conscious mind is the part that we are always aware of. It can think about the past, present or future. It’s the bit that reminds you to buy a pint of milk or make that phone call. The subconscious mind, is like a cross between a filing cabinet and the engine that drives you. Having been programmed from childhood by your environment and all the experiences you’ve had, it stores all your habits and behaviours and acts like your personal automatic pilot.

Not all the patterns of behaviour stored in the sub conscious are helpful or useful e.g. phobias or fears and bad habits such as overeating or smoking. This is where hypnotherapy comes in, because the easiest ways to make changes to these imprinted patterns is by directly accessing the subconscious mind. During a hypnotherapy session, you will be guided into a pleasant and relaxed state and once the ‘chatter’ of the conscious mind is switched off, your subconscious mind will be able to absorb the new positive and beneficial suggestions it is being offered. So promoting rapid and long-lasting change.
